🧐Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online Lessons:
Q❓: I have no experience with katana. Will I still be able to catch up?
A💡: You don’t need any previous katana martial arts experience to participate in our lessons.
Seki Sensei, the instructor of the online lessons, will carefully instruct you on how to handle the katana regardless of your level. You will also be able to access all the videos of the past lessons so you can watch what every other student has learned. You can also send us videos of your progress, and Seki Sensei will be happy to give you feedback.
Q❓: What is the right length of the Iaito (zinc alloy training katana) I should use?
A💡: Please purchase an Iaitō at least two blocks longer than the standard length.
The standard length for Seki Sensei is about 177cm, so he should use a 2.45 Shaku long katana. However, he uses a 2.6 Shaku-long katana that is supposed to be used by someone 190cm tall. If the katana is too short, it becomes too easy to draw, which is not good for training.
Q❓: Can I join even if I belong to a different Ryuha style?
A💡: Yes, it’s not a problem at all.
The Seki Sensei himself has trained in more than five styles and various other weapons. If you don’t want others to know that you are participating, you can join the online lessons with your camera off. To have the Sensei check your progress, you can send us a video of you practicing.

I can imagine in the hands of martial artist the pole arm or halberd will be their most ideal choice of weapon especially when mixed in some eastern techniques with western techniques which utilise the full potential of the polearm or halberd fully

The handguard would poke into the wrists of whoevers using it if it was sideways. The longsword bas many different styles that require the use of the wrists to change the direction of the blade so having the handguard facing the way it does kinda makes it easy to use with your wrists. The rest of the arm is more for power while most the of the actual movement of the blade comes from the wrist.

seki senseis skills are beyond this world its amazing how he came up with all of these technics in a short time and was able to find so many strenghs and weaknesses of the halberd amazing video . and after watching alot of videos about different weapons and their pros and cons in my opinion every weapon has its strenghs and weaknesses and its better than other weapons in its intended situation and the most important thing is the persons skills who is using the weapon for example a warrior with a katana wins against a warrior with halberd if he is the better fighter. and i want to mention i saw a movie where the samurai choosed wakizashi for duel in the house and he won because the enemys katana got stock at the ceiling when he did an overhead strike it shows that even in case of a katana and a wakizashi there is no better or inferior weapon they both serve their purposes ( i would like to hear your opinions too if you guys think i was wrong about something mention it )

#1... yeah that's a weak grip and if the target sneezes he will disarm him. 2 ok that ain't bad. 3 useless. 4 icepick grip. Universally recognized as useful but only in limited situations. Such as off hand draw or tight quarters.

Thank you very much for posting videos like this online! It helps me with my own training. I very much appreciate the explanation that Seki Sensei gave for the purpose of sparing, and the materials that Asayama Ichiden-Ryū use for this exercise. I will be incorporating these into my training and teaching. I also very much appreciate your openness and willingness to learn - that in itself takes guts... If you continue to engage in various challenges, like these, it will be amazing to see how you grow and develop in the coming years! Much encouragement for you to continue your training!

The blade is heavy and pointy. You don't want large swings if you are not 300% you will hit a fatal blow. The idea is to aim for deep cuts around face, shoulders and ribs. Different from other swords, it is also a defense as it absorbs lots of impact and helps to keep multiple enemies away

Seki Sensei can face swords and spears but still gets flustered with celebrities haha glad to see he is human. Awesome video, only time we get to see Sensei like this. I love the new intro mostly because it meant so much to Seki Sensei. They are obviously excellent musicians and truly bring the Japanese spirit into their music. So its fitting that its now the intro. Amazing. Congrats all of you. Nothing but up from here, I hope to one day soon become a student myself.

I agree with the other comments, it would be nice to revive those kata. The point is to revive the reyuha and it's culture. The other headmasters made sure to write them down for a reason. That would be awesome. Thank you Seki Sensei for another very cool video. 💪

Halberd is probably my favourite polearm, it's just so versatile making it actually difficult to predict what attack will come next, and compared to a spear the only weakness I'm aware of is that it's pretty top-heavy. Speaking of, a weapon that is very difficult to smack away is a Polish sabre, a weapon designed for a very quick exchange of slashes. I'm Polish and therefore would love to see it tried out on this channel.

Rapiers rely on a style of fencing call Cut-and-Thrust, much like the foils you see in the Olympics but with sharpened bladed edges. Seki Sensei did immediately grasp the basics, small, subtle, motions that make big impacts. The rapier is meant to be light, agile, and fast above all else. As Seki Sensei noted, the moment a rapier fighter dodges a counter attack is coming with lightning speed as, often, they my not have needed to parry your weapon at all. The rapier actually relies on it's thin, slim, but long, profile to confuse and bait opponents into making mistakes. If Seki Sensei wants to see this in action, the recent Paris Olympics had some amazing fencing that show the unique attributes of the fencing style. It is also worth noting that there is a 2 sword style in fencing in what the fighters employ a small dagger with a long handguard for parrying of your opponents sword either with the dagger or the rapier, followed by an immediate and powerful thrust from the other. In practice it is extremely complex but, if mastered, is hard to successfully defend against.

Am I the only one loving that Seki Sensei has hung each of the western style weapons he's tried with the same honor and respect as the katana and Japanese weapons in his dojo? Something people over look or forget, at least for the longsword and the rapier, is that swords were a sign of noble status. You were at the very least a Knight if you carried one and later on, with the rapier, an officer.

6:11 In this case I would say that the weakness is based on the flashy design that the replica has, normally the axe of the halberd is somewhat square or the curve of the axe is very close to the shaft

Former SCA Combatant here. Leg attacks exists, and did happen, but at least in our end of the spectrum, they are considered heavily dishonorable and are to be avoided. In mundane terms, it's a dangerous place to strike, you generally want your sparring partner to *not* break anything (and swinging a 1.25 inch thick rattan club at someone's leg is a good way to snap a bone,) and most importantly, it makes for boring fights when people are just trying to poke at limbs to disable which leads to people just sitting on their knees and desperately trying to get in that body work and snap shots with 90% less momentum. In terms of manuals that suggest against it, that's kinda of a toss-up. You can find some that say it's useful, you can find some that says NOT to do it, and there are a choice few that say "If you are against someone of skill, then it should not be attempted."
